Turn your green ideas into green cash

April 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Living the life of a typical college student, I’m always looking for that extra way to earn some cash. The college life is not a glamorous one when it comes to spending, thus we’re always looking for ways to cut corners. Well, now I’ve got it. I’ve discovered an easy, very green-minded way of thickening the wallet: put your academic brain to use and enter in “idea-winning” contests.

Yes, this may sound as hopeful or definitive as winning the lottery, but because our environment is in such peril and diminishing before our generation’s eyes, businesses everywhere are looking for ways to help out.

Planet Smoothie has created a contest in which the winner wins $5,000 as well as a year supply of smoothies. Now that’s a big prize, quite a chunk of change–and it would make a substantial dent in my loan accumulation, but we won’t get started on that, I’ll become bitter. Five grand goes to the innovative person who comes up with the best idea for either reusing, recycling or repurposing their current smoothie cups. They’re using the material polystyrene for their containers, however it is not good for the environment long-term, despite that it’s a recycled product.

Kroger grocery stores have also adopted a new plan in which they invited the public to design their reusable cloth totes. The grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift certificate to Kroger (attention college kids, that’s equal to almost 3 months of groceries!!), and the design may be printed in Kroger groceries nationwide. However EVERYONE who submits a design gets a FREE cloth tote on the spot! So if you submit an idea you win!

So consider yourself hired and apply for these easy benefits! And help out our environment along the way, afterall Earth day is less than a week away!
